Meat testing – A few words of reassurance

February 22, 2013 by The Co-operative Food beef2

As a leading British Retailer and Farmer we know how important it is to know where your food comes from. That idea has driven our actions for over 100 years.

At the Co-operative we are able to place the highest importance on making sure all our own-brand products are responsibly sourced. So you can have total confidence in the integrity of products you buy from us.

Our latest tests on all our own-brand minced beef products have been confirmed as containing beef and only beef.

Honesty, fairness and trust have been central to how we’ve run our business for the past 170 years. In fact The Co-operative was created as the answer to merchants selling adulterated food.

Since then we’ve been setting high standards that others follow ‚Äď selling only free range eggs and responsibly sourced fish for example.

Our principles haven’t changed. You can be sure that our commitment to do the right thing for you is as strong as ever.

As announced on 30 Jan, independent tests we commissioned by of our own-brand frozen 4 Beef Quarter Pounder Burgers and The Co-operative 8 Beef Frozen Burgers with onion, found horse DNA in four of 17 samples. These burgers were immediately withdrawn from sale as a precautionary measure on 16 Jan 2013. Enhanced processes are being agreed and developed with suppliers to ensure clear provenance and that our high standards are delivered on all our product ranges.
