Tim Atkin’s recomends The Co-operative’s Fairtrade MalbecNovember 22, 2013 by The Co-operative Food
The Co-operative Food has introduced the 2012 vintage of its Fairtrade Argentine Malbec – which we believe is the best ever from the La Riojana vineyard. Tim Atkin, a British Master of Wine and award winning journalist agrees, stating “This is the best Fairtrade wine I’ve had yet from Argentina and one of the best I’ve had from anywhere, too.” read Tim’s full review here, or visit¬†timatkin.com.
The full-bodied Malbec shows wonderful varietal character with excellent oak integration from barrel ageing. The complex bouquet of vanilla, chocolate and tobacco is followed by concentrated flavours of succulent fruit, spicy overtones and smooth, firm tannins.
As well as being delicious, funds generated from the sale of The Co-operative Fairtrade Argentine Malbec, and the other four wines in the range, pay for vital projects for the growers, vineyard workers and their families in the isolatedvillageofTilimuquiin thenorth westprovinceofArgentina.
Since receiving Fairtrade accreditation, the additional social premiums (both from Fairtrade and direct from The Co-operative), have helped to build a vital water pump for the village, and more recently, a secondary school.
The much-needed school offers a free technical education based on agriculture to children aged 13 to 18 years old, and benefits hundreds of children living in the local region. The school took on a small number of pupils when the first phase opened in 2010. At the end of last year, the school was completed, and now takes over 200 students. The school offers further education to a place where, before now, children were only offered schooling up to the age of 14.
Ed Robinson, Fairtrade Wine Buyer for The Co-operative, commented: “The Co-operative is the leading retailer of Fairtrade wine in theUK- our wines account for around 60% of Fairtrade wine sales every year.  The school project really goes to show how Fairtrade can transform the lives of people all over the world, enabling them to have a better future.
‚ÄúThe 2012 vintage of this stunning Malbec is the best yet, and we believe that our shoppers will love it. The perfect match for a great quality, premium British steak – naturally!‚ÄĚ
The Co-operative Fairtrade Argentine Malbec 2012 is available in all Co-operative stores nationwide, priced at £6.99.
