Three Q awards for The Co-operative.

If you’re going to win an award in the grocery business then it’s a Q you’ll be most keen on. The annual awards recognise the best of foods from across the retail sectors in the UK – and this year we won three!

I thought I had my Christmas food all planned out, but then when I read about the successes in the Q awards I decided to make a couple of changes to include all three of the winners.

I’m already a fan of the TI Stonebaked Cranberry Baguette, this is a rustic white baguette with little studs of sweet cranberry that gives it a real lift. It won the Christmas Cakes, Bakery and Desserts award. The judges praised the concept, liking the crunchy outer crust and soft sweet fruit. I’ll be eating it with all sorts of Christmas favourites like a good strong cheddar, or a paté like The Co-operative’s Brussels Paté with Caramelised Shallots. The combination of slight sweetness from the bread, and the savoury will be just right.

Another winner was the ready to cook Piri Piri Spatckcock Chicken from the eat in range. Now this is a beauty. Spatchcock Chicken is quick to cook and easier to serve, and the piri piri chicken has a lovely warming kick without being too hot for those who are nervous of their spices. That was echoed by the judges who said it has “A good quality chicken and a fine balance of piri piri sauce without being overpowering”. We have this at home when I am in a bit of a hurry but want to serve something really tasty. I serve it up with chips and a good salad, and I’m going to try it on the barbecue next year too.

From Portuguese piri piri to French Bourguignon. Our third winner at the Qs was the Truly Irresistible Beef Bourguignon ready meal. The Co-operative’s version of the classic French recipe is a generous portion of succulent, melt in the mouth British beef in a rich indulgent sauce that’s a perfect meal for two. One of the judges commented “The meat is lovely and tender and the onion is very good so the right ingredients have been used”.

We’ll be having all of these over the next couple of weeks among the party food and fantastic meals – give them a try at home, you won’t be disappointed.

Have your say
