Tell me about Instagram

If you like taking photos with your phone then you really should try Instagram.

There are so many new apps being launched for smart phones you’d have to dedicate a lot of time to keeping up if you wanted to. But Instagram is certainly worth trying.

It’s a fun way to quickly apply filters onto your photos that make them look quite different, and share them with your friends.

You can take photos using the Instagram app, or take them normally with your camera phone and import them to Instagram.

Then comes the fun bit!

You can share your photos as they are, but it’s more interesting to apply one of the 18 filters that are called things like Lo-fi, which slightly blurs your shot, accentuating the greens and yellows, or Kelvin which is super saturated and with a scratchy border. Then you can bring specific areas of the photo into sharper focus, blurring the rest. You can even add a white border to make them look like an old Polaroid.

When you’ve created the effect you’re after you can share them via the Instagram app, where you can see photos of all the other people you follow. You can also copy your shots to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and Foursquare, or email them direct to your friends. In fact there’s not much you can’t do when you also use some of the apps that have developed around Instagram.

What other Instagram related apps are there?

Technology spreads in wonderful ways, and as soon as something good is noticed then you can be pretty sure there’ll be someone working to improve it. That’s certainly the case with apps, and there are some beauties that expand the use of Instagram. Here are a couple of my favourites, but there are many more: one of the lovely features of Instagram is the synthesis of old and new, applying old photography effects, but in a quick and modern way. Postagramapp takes that one stage further and lets you create a postcard (remember those?) from your Instagram photo and mail it to a friend. How good is that? lets you see other people’s photos of wherever you are, or of some other place that you’d like to see. I loved it because I went onto it when I was on holiday and saw some of my Instagram photos alongside other people’s of the same area. if you don’t have a smart phone you can still view instagram profiles using the Followgram website, which displays Instagram profiles on a desktop.
