One Water

Water is life.

Yet there are over one billion people in the world who do not have access to clean drinking water.

One billion. That’s a number few of us can even conceive of.

We’re told that water is life but how often do we stop and think about what that means.

I’ve sat here now and thought about how much I’ve used today, from my first cup of tea, through a few glasses of iced water when it got warm during the day, and all that I used to cook with. It wasn’t until I’d considered the eating and drinking that I remembered about having a shower this morning, washing clothes during the day, and even washing the car.

Of course many of those things I could have done without, and not felt hardship, but I know that I would think about every little drop if I had to walk several miles to collect water, and then carry all that I had collected.

The Co-operative works with the One Foundation to help bring clean water to over a million families across Africa. Families who may have had to survive by collecting water miles from home several times a day, and who haven’t had enough water to tend crops, let alone luxuries like washing clothes.

Every time you buy a bottle of The Co-operative Fairbourne Springs water from your local Co-operative a fixed donation is made to the foundation, depending on the size of the bottle – it will even tell you on the bottle how much that donation will be.

The One Foundation was formed by a group of friends back in 2003, and by 2005 the first bottles of One Water rolled off the production line.

They are on a long journey, but working with The Co-operative helps massively. In fact The Co-operative has raised over £5m to help. The Foundation funds projects that help place, or repair water pumps in areas of need across Africa, and in Malawi there is project to supply cooking stoves that dramatically reduce fuel waste and subsequently reduce CO2 production.

You can learn a lot more about The One Foundation on their website, and on The Co-operative’s site.

Remember that every bottle you buy makes a difference, yet all you have to do is to make the right choice. Buy The Co-operative’s Fairbourne Springs water when you next buy bottled water and you’ll know that you too have helped.
