A fair question

September 29, 2014 by The Co-operative Food fairness

As Brits, we like to think we’re pretty fair – we’re honest, we try not to discriminate, we avoid favouritism. In fact, you could say fairness is one of our defining characteristics. But this autumn, these notions are set to be challenged – during The Great British Fairness Debate, from 29 September to 12 October, the Fairtrade Foundation wants us all to ask ourselves: “Are we really as fair as we think we are?”

Fair deal

The Co-operative was the first major retailer to get behind the Fairtrade movement back in 1992 when we began to stock Cafédirect Coffee. Since then, our range has grown to include tea, chocolate, wine, sugar, bananas and more – giving you extra choice and farmers and producers around the world a better deal. We really do believe that Fairtrade is good trade.

Fair play

So this autumn we’re encouraging all our customers to take the Great British Fairness Test to see where you score on the fair-play scale. Will you be a ‘fair-weather’ friend or will you turn out to be a ‘fair-dinkum’ sort who has everyone’s best interests at heart? It’s a fun quiz, but the message is serious – we all need to understand what fairness means to us so we can work together to make the world a fairer place.

Fair enough

So come on. Take the test, then make a pledge to work with the Fairtrade Foundation to #befair for the future!
