Charity of the Year

Every other year those lovely members and staff at the Co-operative nominate their charity of the year and then spend the next 12 months holding various fund raising events to build a big pot of money for the chosen cause.

Last time around it was Mencap, and ENABLE Scotland, and at the end of the year the charities were presented with a cheque for a whopping ÂŁ7.2 million pounds.

Voting closed back in October for the 2013 charity. Just a couple of weeks ago it was announced that this year’s worthy cause would be Carers Trust, an excellent organisation that supports the estimated 7 million unpaid carers across the country.

A carer can be anyone who looks after another person in the family, a friend, or just a neighbour, but doesn’t get paid for their effort. Many carers are really young, we hear of boys and girls who look after their mums, or maybe their grandparents. Chances are no one asked them to do the work, they just saw it needed doing and got on with it.

Being a carer can be a huge drain on people and the Carers Trust is there to provide help and support, it also has a dedicated website – specifically targeted at carers who are under 18. The fund raising effort will target raising funds to support young carers aged between 14 and 25.

The charity of the year was launched with a Rock Around The Clock theme at The Co-operative. It is acknowledgement of the 24 hour nature of many young people’s efforts. The team were joined by singer songwriter and actress Jade Ewen, herself a carer for many years.

You’ll see plenty of articles in the press, and probably hear about events on Co-operative Radio over the coming months – so now you know what it’s all about why not get involved? For more information on how to get involved, take a look at The Co-oeprative Group website>
